HEADLINE: A Pro in Prime Position . WSOP: Day 6 of the Main Event
Body:
Somewhere in Vegas, 64 poker players are having a lot more fun than you. To live with this unnerving reality, take solace in the fact that they’re probably feeling the pressure too. As the Main Event draws closer to closing time, some of the remaining players cling tightly to their chips, just hoping for a higher money finish. Others are playing fast and loose, hoping to cover ground before the table count decreases. And then there’s Phil Ivey.
Phil has long been considered one of the game’s best young stars. Although he’s never won the WSOP, he’s a prohibited favorite at every table he plays at – even if the competition is fierce. As most refer to Phil, even noted pros such as Chris Ferguson and Doyle Brunson, he’s the most feared man in all of poker.
With a face like stone and will like iron, Ivey plays as tough as ivory. As it stands, Ivey is currently third in chip count, and playing some of the best poker in his short career. While other pros remaining in the tournament, such as Antonio Esfandiari, rely on streaks and gimmicks to remain vibrant, Phil is as solid as they come, never wavering and never playing differently, no matter the stakes.
Darvin Moon is currently in the lead after day 6 with over 9 million in chips, but the ever dangerous, always cunning Phil Ivey is close behind in third with a respectable 6 million-plus. He’s a few good pots away from a commanding lead, and although he’s out-chipped by 30% courtesy of Moon, Ivey is never one to shy away from the big stacks. Billy Kopp is in second position with just over 8 million.
Day 7 of the WSOP would tell the tale for these learned poker players. The rest of the field would be wise to steer clear of Ivey. At this stage of the tournament, no one wants to take their chances against Phil. They’d be better off betting their stack at roulette.
