HEADLINE: Chips were down for poker champion
Body:
A 31-YEAR-OLD player with just $250 to his name is $300,000 richer
after winning one of the world's largest poker tournaments last
night.
Rodney Davidson's financial situation was so dire his car was
on the verge of being repossessed when he won the Australian Poker
League event at Luna Park.
Mr Davidson, who began playing poker two years ago at a friend's
house on Friday nights, edged out 230 other competitors.
"You never know what your next card is going to be,"
Mr Davidson, of Bega, said.
"One minute you're up, the next minute you might come crashing
down."
Mr Davidson said he planned on investing his winnings in real
estate.
Hundreds of poker fans watched the event, which had a total prize
pool of $1million. Singer Shannon Noll performed as the new face
of the Australian Poker League at the event, which attracted players
from around Australia, while sportsmen such as Willie Mason mingled
with the 800 guests.
The games were played against a backdrop of growing concern about
the NSW Government's review into the booming industry in pubs
and clubs.
