HEADLINE: Android Real-Money Poker App Coming from Microgaming

Android device owners will soon have another option for real money poker on their phones, as Microgaming announced plans to release an Android real-money poker application in the coming months.

The news isn’t of much use to US players, as Microgaming no longer accepts players from that country. Microgaming is a poker network that is home to dozens of poker rooms, all sharing (more or less) the same player pool; notable room include LadBrokes, UniBet and PokerTime.

There’s no word on whether the app will simply be a scaled-down version of the regular client or a more complete re-imagining of the poker experience. CalvinAyre.com reports that a demo of the application will be on display this coming week at ICE, so look for more details to emerge then.

Microgaming will be entering a sphere that is becoming rapidly crowded, joining recent entrant bwin and dominant player Full Tilt Poker.

Full Tilt’s mobile version of their poker room operates on via their Rush Poker format, meaning players can play a single table on their mobile device but avoid the downtime between hands, as Rush Poker simply moves you on to a new hand once you fold.

With more and more rooms coming online for real money via Android devices, an obvious question arises: What about PokerStars? The 800lb gorilla of the online poker industry would no doubt immediately have a seismic impact on the real-money mobile poker market, but Stars has been essentially mum on their plans for a mobile poker client since making some waves almost a year ago with a request for feedback on mobile poker from players.

Is the market just too small for Stars to care? Or are they spending their time developing a format the will mesh well with mobile use, such as Full Tilt did with Rush Poker? Our bet is on the former.
