HEADLINE: SC Supreme Court to hear arguments on poker ruling
Body:
South Carolina's Supreme Court justices are considering whether poker is a game of luck or skill.
The justices are hearing arguments Tuesday on an appeal of a Charleston judge's ruling that Texas Hold'em is a game of skill, not chance.
A ruling last year by Circuit Judge Markley Dennis meant playing the game in a private home does not violate state antigambling laws. Dennis overturned the conviction of five people arrested when police raided a Mount Pleasant card game, saying skilled players generally beat those with fewer skills and that players improve with practice.
Attorney General Henry McMaster has appealed. Last session, legislators tried to advance bills to decriminalize friendly in-home poker games, but those issues stalled in both chambers.
