Daniel Idema of Tsawwassen outlasted 643 players to walk away
with the top prize at British Columbia Lottery Corporation's BC
Poker Championships, held November 18-25 at River Rock Casino
Resort.
After three days of tournament play in the No Limit Texas Hold'Em
main event, Idema ended up with all the chips to win $402,500.
This is his first major tournament win.
The 23-year-old former hockey player ended up at the final table
on Sunday with one of the highest chip counts, and stayed strong
till the end. "I caught some major breaks in this tournament
and I was fortunate enough to win," said Idema, who ended
up with pocket kings as his winning hand. "It's been a great
experience. I never expected to make it this far."
Almost 1,700 poker fans from all over North America competed
in the week-long tournament, which featured four Texas Hold'Em
events for a total prize pool of more than $2.4 million. The top
10 per cent of players from each event placed in the money.
"The popularity of poker is stronger than ever," said
Darryl Schiewe, British Columbia Lottery Corporation's Acting
Vice President of Casino Gaming. "Our tournaments continue
to make poker history and to attract some of the best players
in the world. Congratulations to all the winners."
The first place finishers from each event were:
§ Paula Stregger of Vancouver defeated 200 players to win
$30,000 in the Ladies' Only event on November 18.
§ Brian Joslin of Hamilton, Ontario, defeated 591 players
to win $148,000 in the No Limit event on November 19.
§ Scott Craig of Vancouver defeated 240 players to win $63,500
in the Pot Limit event on November 20.
§ Daniel Idema of Tsawwassen defeated 643 players to win
$402,500 in the No Limit main event from November 22 to 25.
