Doing Well Again 07-02-06
Body:
Joseph Hachem, who won the 2005 World Series Of Poker main event,
is busy proving that result was no fluke. At the 2006 WSOP he
has just made the final table of Event #5, the $2,500 NL Hold'em
Short-Handed 6/Table where he will take on "Dutch" Boyd
after Daniel Negreanu busted out in 8th spot...
Play Tournament Qualifiers
This WSOP tournament looked like it would culminate in a dream
final table for ESPN. Because this is a short-handed tournament
the final table would start with only six players. Televised poker
doesn't get any better than Negreanu, Hachem, and Boyd, whose
TV confession about mental illness last year kept him in the spotlight
when his poker could not.
But it was not to be as Negreanu's pocket Aces were cracked by
Boyd's pocket sevens when the latter flopped a set and slow-played
them brilliantly, consigning Negreanu to an 8th place finish,
agonizingly close to making the final table. It was Daniel's first
cash in the World Series this year, and although the $38,852 is
chump change to Negreanu the result must have been encouraging.
As we have argued previously, Hachem is no Moneymaker (can he
even afford the buy-ins for these events anymore?) He is a genuine
poker talent, more
like Greg Raymer, and it would be a wonderful achievement if he
were to win a second bracelet at the 2006 World Series Of Poker.
He faces an uphill task here. Boyd, who was the brash "leader"
of The Crew - a group of young guns who stormed the poker world
in 2004 - has a substantial chip lead, which he has held since
eliminating Negreanu. If anyone can beat him from this position
it would be Hachem, who proved how adept he is at short-stack
tournament poker play at last year's Main Event.
